PARAGUAY

THEY ARE:
A South American nation with a historical rivalry with Bolivia, indeed beef with most other South American countries. In 2008 they held the worlds biggest ever barbecue featuring 30,000 people. For the win!

AS A FOOTBALL NATION:
This is the eighth finals appearance for Paraguay. Over the course of those tournaments they have seldom done anything making it out of the group stage three times. Their shirts look like those of a barbershop group.

MY OWN EXPERIENCE:
We had to play them at Mexico 1986 and then we had to play them again in 2006. We beat them both times. I was a fan of Henry Rollins lookalike Jose Luis Chilavert and his scoring exploits as a goalkeeper.

IN 2010:
Group F is widely expect to go to Italy and with New Zealand not expected to ruffle any feathers it is looking as if it is between Paraguay and Slovakia to take second spot in the group. Traditionally Paraguay has tended to fill this role on to get eliminated at the first hurdle once beyond the group stage. They have Roque Santa Cruz of Manchester City amongst their forwards. In qualification they defeated Argentina 1-0.

FAMOUS PLAYERS:
Chilavert and the huge medal that he used to place in the back of his goal for good luck.

MOST OBVIOUS REFERENCE:
Red and white shirts.

AWAY FROM FOOTBALL:
Lots of stuff, its just that I don’t know any of it.

NUMBER OF PEOPLE FROM PARAGUAY THAT I KNOW:
None.

QUOTE FROM A PARAGUAYAN:
Not coming.

DO I LIKE THEM:
I have to admit to being indifferent.

FINAL COMMENT:
Have a fine time.
